Where's the gun? - Southern Nevada Style

Inspired by Weerd Beard and his "Gun Death" pieces I decided to do some here but mine are going to just be stories from southern Nevada. Help people see how even a small area can be full of violent non-gun violence against each other. I could go back and do some of the major cases since we have been here but I like keeping my lunch. Of course this first one is not exactly good at keeping the food down.

Investigators say godmother beat baby with metal pipe:

Investigators are revealing new information on how 14-month-old Dyon Johnson was allegedly abused and murdered by her godmother, Mariann Harris.

Southern California authorities booked 23-year-old Harris on a fugitive warrant late Wednesday night after Harris fled Las Vegas for a relative's home in Victorville, Calif.

After the baby's August 12 death, there was speculation about how the infant suffered the blunt force trauma that caused her death.

Investigators now say they believe it had nothing to do with a fall, but rather a metal bar that Harris used to strike the little girl.

According to court documents, the paramedics that arrived to Harris' apartment home noticed the child was cold, had glossy eyes, and had probably been dead for some time. Once at the hospital, doctors noticed Dyon was covered in bruises around her face, head and collar bone.

Disgusting nasty woman. I am so glad she was caught despite running. Of course this isn't a death to rally against though right because it isn't violent enough? Please people. The filth of humanity is going to find a way with or without a gun. I know many laugh at the saying but face the facts- Guns do NOT kill people, PEOPLE kill people and will continue to do so no matter what laws you put in place.A  criminal is labeled that for the pure and simple fact they have no regard for law!

Well that is a way to try to use the law in a bad way.

Found this lovely Nevada news article. A dad doesn't like his daughter's boyfriend and asks him to leave the property. Boyfriend refuses. Dad shoots him dead.  Fabulous. The anti-gun people are going to get so up in arms over this case. Having been pretty unclear over our location before except for saying the desert I will say we are in southern Nevada AND news like this makes me mad. It gets the entire area riled up over gun rights. As it is we finally made some headway over some stupid permit rules requiring you to qualify with every semi-auto you plan to carry concealed. If you wanted to carry it you had to bring it in and pass a shoot test. However revolvers were considered one thing so you only had to qualify with 1 revolver. That was recently changed so now we only need one qualifier for semi-auto and 1 qualifier for revolver. Soooooo back to topic. Here OC is not a good idea especially in the cities. Police have a shoot first ask questions later mentality. If it is a gun on a person it must mean that person is a criminal bent on wickedness so we better shoot them. I swear we have an officer involved shooting once a week just in Las Vegas. The surrounding areas aren't a ton better. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

**Another article, this one from the major paper of the area. I found the comments to be interesting. This one is very much going to create ripples for the area. I also want to say that if my post seems in anyway heartless it is not meant to be so. Maybe my feelings aren't displayed well but just from the facts given it seems that the dad used the fact that he told the boyfriend to leave and he didn't as an excuse to use deadly force. He used the fact that he could technically call him a trespasser as a reason to shoot.  Not knowing anything but the slim details given it looks like stone cold murder that he hoped to hide behind trespassing. That is what makes me mad. We are not a Castle Doctrine state though prosecution is rare when the resident has cause to use deadly force. This still doesn't seem to fall into that type of scenario.

Las Vegas plagued by fake cops!

Wow!! I try to keep up on events of the region so I follow news from different cities. If you don't know what is going on you can't prepare. Saw this news story and was pretty taken aback. To sum it up 4 men in recent weeks have been arrested for impersonating LEO of various branches. Doing some looking some have sexually assulted, some have just ticketed.


It never ceases to amaze me the lengths some go to perpetrate a crime. The funny thing is that all of the effort and funds they put into doing this crap could be spent doing something worthwhile but that switch in their brains has been flipped so they behave like scum instead. Is is no wonder the U.S. is loathed? We have a great blue collar population. But the lower chunk is full of lazy jerks looking for the easy way and the top chunk is looking for the best way to make more millions while spending the least possible. Of course the ones the most hurt are the law abiding hard working middle class.


Yuck!! If anyone deserves more tax breaks it is middle America. Mr. 1.5 billion won't miss a few million more in taxes. He just has more accountants and lawyers to play the system.

Anyway back to this lovely trend in tourist country. I read one of these smarty pants dudes even had the brass to walk right up to the real LEO. Wow. Talk about confidence. I think it is a sad day when this becomes a trend and when they are daring enough to figure they will pass muster even with real LEO. Yet more proof that having a CCW is a very good thing, especially for a woman. As is a cell.

Also should you encounter a cop that you are concerned about dial 911. Give your location and they can inform you of the nearest precinct and guide you there for your safety if it is at night and you are worried as well as if you are being pulled over by a real officer. If you are informing them and not making any effort to evade you will not be ticketed for that. Better safe than sorry.

Heck yeah!! Finally some truth!

I like to read the news. I have a compulsion to read about crime. Yes it is a filthy addiction but one I can't seem to curb. For some reason reading/watching about the way human beings can torture each other is riveting. Not in a "Yay, that's awesome." way but more of a "I can not believe people can be so low." I tend to follow crimes against children the most as I want to see if justice prevails or once again the system fails and more children are at risk. Something about these crimes tears at me and breaks my heart so I try to keep tabs to make sure those precious ones get what small peace they can. I habitually check CNN and their justice page as well as Nancy Grace. I ran across this story today. I know she pled guilty to avoid the death penalty and that's fine. I am just glad she admitted to what she did to that sweet girl. When a child is harmed that is the age of one of my children it really just makes me so sad. I am glad that there can be some closure in this case for the Cantu family and that the responsible party will have to pay for the crime for the rest of her life.

People are cheering this little **** on?!

Last time I was cruising online, and figured I'd hit up CNN.com before heading to bed. One article that immediately caught my eye was about a small island not too far away. They have had a rash of problems due to a kid whose apparently made it his life goal to drive everyone in the small community to the point of a lynching.

This little idiot was first arrested at the age of 12 for burglary and was given the nickname "barefoot burglar" because he'd leave barefoot tracks in the business and vacation homes he terrorized. He's now graduated onto stealing and wrecking planes, including one that buzzed the Olympic No-Fly Zone before crash landing back on Orcas Island.

All of this seems odd to me, seeing as the kid grew up in the area, but well, it still isn't a large area. How hard could it be? Police put out a huge manhunt after his latest stunt (including helicopters, dogs and heat-signature equipment) but eventually scaled back and never caught a clue.

But the oddest part is, this kid has fans. No more than fans, he has a stinking cult following. He even has a fan club. Why would people want to encourage and support this guy?! He's not some freedom fighter, he's a punk ass kid full of teen-angst who apparently has a knack at getting out of sticky situations.

Today I looked around and read several articles, including his fan club site. I'm reading a lot of things about how he's ADHD, and very smart, but was raised by a single mom who is inattentive and blah blah blah. This in now way makes what he's doing okay. According to CNN, he is suspected of recently breaking into a grocery store for food and supplies. People were cheering the act on Facebook, saying to stick it to the man. The only man he's "sticking it to" is the owner of the small shop whose slept there every night since the intrusion.

Shame on you, Kid. And even more so, shame on your supporters.

Yet another pathetic excuse for a parent.

So I am working on getting rid of a headache and was just catching up on my news. A link on CNN's Nancy Grace's web page said "Toddler found dead in trash." I had to read it because stories like this just rip my heart out. Then I read the story and not only did my heart break but the anger factor went through the roof. I am so tired of reading and hearing about women who kill their children rather than ask for help or give them up. Race is no excuse, age is no excuse, laziness is no excuse, IQ is no excuse. There is no reason that children should die. Infants have safe haven recourse and older kids do have options. You can give up your rights. I know there can be legal ramifications but this has got to stop. I can't have any more children for a variety of reasons but we would love having more. We would adopt in a heartbeat and have actually talked about adopting a sibling pair from foster care once Squeak is older. My husband was in the system purely because his parents didn't want him. It was so hard sure, but better than being neglected and starved and abused due to shear stupidity and laziness. I miss the days when family was the most important and raising the children as a group was encouraged. It does take a village and all of us need to step up if we see a child in need so that these type of senseless acts never happen again.

Unabomber should have no say!

I am sitting in the 'rents office doing my news wanderings and find a story that is a blast from horrendous crimes past. Ted Kaczynski is fighting the release of his personal effects to auction. Frankly I don't see how he has any rights let alone a right to privacy. Sure I find it a little morbid that people want to buy his things but as the money goes to his victims I say go for it. When you become a notorious criminal and get caught everything you have should go to the people hurt! Then add the vengence of taking away the offenders privacy and I see a win-win.

Could be good or could be bad news!

So I am on my pilgrimage to the desert and have not been in contact with the world much except for phone calls to Gracie and Maggy. Anyway so last night I got to my Mom's house and we were talking about this lauded blog. (Yes may be only lauded by the 3 of us but a girl can dream!) I was talking about how I tend to be the hot topic blogger of the group. That led to talking about Drew Peterson which led to my mom telling me that the body they found was ruled to not be either Stacey or Lisa. I am undecided on if this is good news or bad news. It is good because that leaves the chances open that either woman is safe but bad because still we have no answers and with Drew Peterson up for murder charges the fact that Stacey is missing is not a very hopeful thing. I just hope that when the body is identified it will bring closure to another family that is in desperate need.

Cooties!!!

So I read TMZ. I know it is gossipy smut but it is dang fine gossip, lol. Anyway I spied this lovely story and just had to cringe. Ummmm..... Can you say yuck? Seriously he was 12 when they got together. That is soooo gross. If the story was girl meets boy, they fall in love, they have 2 kids, fate seperates them for 7 years, they reunite and marry to live in wedded bliss sounds great. Too bad boy was 12 and it was a prison term to seperate them. I just find this wrong on so many levels!

Melissa Huckaby just won't give up.

Found a new story on this trash. I am guessing more kids will continue to pop up from this woman's past. Obviously she had been working up the nerve to do what she did to sweet Sandra Cantu for a while. It strikes me as incredibly sad that her behavior was not noticed before a life was lost. I wish people were more aware of what goes on around them. Maybe a senseless death could have been stopped!

Do they really think this will stop prostitution?

Craigslist has got to be beyond dense. They are changing their "erotic" section to an "adult" section. I get the thought. After the whole assault and murder thing was linked to them they are soooo out to cover their butts. Do they not think people will still lie about ages or intentions. This is going to do nothing but make this a craftier trade. Sure "legal adult service providers" will use the new and improved service but the illegal will find a way around and monitoring. Just like a gun ban only hurts legal gun owners all this does is provide a hiccup for the men and women trolling for a quick buck for that drug fix who really care less about rules and regulations. Prostitution is going to happen. Sex is a commodity in pretty much every society and little bumps in that road will not deter those desperate enough to sell themselves illegally. There needs to be legislation in place that really addresses this issue not lawmakers expecting companies to police it for them.
