Quick!! Answer a gun question!
488 words in to the book. My opening is of my girl hunting. She is shooting a .308. Give me the perfect .308 rifle for a 5"4' chick who is an excellent hunter with no physical limitations but that she can carry easily in a pack.

We love comments! We are happy to answer questions, join in debate and conversation, or just say hi. All we ask is for respect. Respect us and others. Keep it civil. Obviously we aren't afraid of cussing but we don't like anyone degraded or invalidated.
We also know we make mistakes. Feel free to call us out. You can't improve things that need it if you aren't aware of it.
If you have an opinion share it but know if it is going to cause hurt to someone we care about we will not approve it.
Most of all have fun!!

For a bolt action, Remington Model 700 SPS Synthetic VAR.
ReplyDeleteFor semi auto, DPMS LR-308.
Barrel length? Made of? Good deets please? You rock! Which is better for Elk?
ReplyDeleteLila- deets: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-sps.aspx
ReplyDeleteThen on the RH side click on specifications
Here's a good resource for information and all around general gun drooling: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php
ReplyDeleteThe remington has a black synthetic stock. It has a 24" barrel and comes in blue or stainless. You can also find models with fluted barrels. Runs about $600+/-.
DPMS is an AR pattern rifle with a 24" stainless, free floating barrel. It's a tad weighty at 11 pounds, but it does break down into two main parts like all other ARs for easy portaging in a pack. Runs about $1200+/-.
You may want to consider creating your own "custom" based on either the Remington 700 action or the AR receivers. That way you can have everything you want and nothing you don't. Assuming price is no object of course.
By all accounts, .308 will ruin an elk's day inside of 500 yards and will still give it cause to take notice out to 800 or so. I have no personal experience to share in that regard, but the ballistics are there for the snooping out on the internet.
Bolt action almost always beats semi auto for accuracy (all other things being equal). Semi auto has the edge in ammo capacity and quicker follow up shots. Long range accuracy is going to come down to the round, the barrel and the scope.
For hunting? Assuming an average 5'4" person's arm length I would recommend a Ruger M-77 in .308 win. Not overly heavy even with it's full length wood stock but shorter than other rifles overall.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Shepard... I hate coming in late... sigh. Remington 700 though!
ReplyDeleteOne can get a shorter stock with a "Butt pad" to reduce recoil for the arm length issue.
ReplyDeleteNFO, don't feel bad. I work from home, and my personal laptop sits next to my work laptop. So, I get first dibs on a lot of material.
ReplyDeleteWell since we are a generation after the apocalyse I am thinking DPMS .308 with a collapsible stock. Can't be super perfect because it is old and she is lucky to have it if you get my thinking.
ReplyDeleteOh, now you give us important information we could have used in the recommendation process. I wish to slightly change my recommendation. In a post apocalyptic situation, I would think bolt actions would have the advantage over semis due to ease of maintenance, simplicity, etc. As a result, I would recommend the recently released Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical AAC®-SD which comes with a threaded barrel for easy attachment of a suppressor. Suppressors will be very useful in a post apocalyptic world. Of course, if you remain intent upon using the DPMS, there are plenty of threaded barrels for that platform to add a suppressor.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...... I figured DPMS because of the breakdown and then because of her age it would stand to reason that given her age she would be left with an unideal weapon while those who are older and lived through the SHTF would have the better guns. Of course she is law enforcement in what passes for it anyway so she would probably have access to better weapons.
ReplyDeleteI think we need a lot more information about your fictional universe to make a better recommendation. For instance, how long past the apocalypse are we talking? That'll have an impact on what's available. Also, in what region is the story set? Texas is more likely to have a large selection of rifles due to the number of military bases, larger population centers, gun culture, etc. than you would expect to find in say Illinois or New York. Another consideration is what kind of government has arisen in the post apocalyptic world. How free or restricted is it with respect to gun control? Government and control will be a function of time since the collapse. Initially, law and order will decline before hitting bottom and rebounding as some form of civilization begins to fill the vacuum created by human desire for safety and security.
ReplyDeleteShepard raises all valid points Lady... But I'd still go with a bolt gun, she'd be 'lucky' to have it as all the EBRs would have been taken first, and the suppressor WOULD be a nice touch. Also, for a female, the sheer weight of multiple mags of .308 are gonna be HEAVY!
