Quote of the Day

"If you want to learn how to build a house, build a house. Don't ask anybody, just build a house"

  1. That is pretty awesome. I think it might be a good idea to start with a shelf or a deck or a shed though. Lots of implied tasks in home building.

  2. Back in the day there was something about "No sense re-inventing the wheel."

We have encyclopedias, and guide books, and the Internet.

More importantly, we have parents and grandparents, friends, and even - *cough*, *cough* - schools.

If you want to learn to build a house - ask to work for, apprentice to, or offer to help a house builder that you respect.

I would not expect someone to learn firearm safety by walking into a pawnshop and picking up "the best" gun they can find. I expect they would learn from safety literature - or a safe shooter.

I also expect someone would become a safe shooter by practicing and taking note of what works and what doesn't. Nothing beats learning by doing. Under respected guidance, be it written, video, or personal.

  3. TOR, yeah I don't think I would start with a house. Maybe a birdhouse.

Brad K., I admit it's an extreme example. But alot of the self-reliance type stuff I've been attempting I don't have anyone to show me. Gardening, canning. cooking... I'm all on my own here. So it struck a nerve.

We love comments! We are happy to answer questions, join in debate and conversation, or just say hi. All we ask is for respect. Respect us and others. Keep it civil. Obviously we aren't afraid of cussing but we don't like anyone degraded or invalidated.

We also know we make mistakes. Feel free to call us out. You can't improve things that need it if you aren't aware of it.

If you have an opinion share it but know if it is going to cause hurt to someone we care about we will not approve it.

Most of all have fun!!
